Step right up and see the Incredible Shrinking Destructo. The newest sideshow to come out of the latest economic crisis. As we all know, I love food. Yams, Cupcakes, Ribs… I eat them all very frequently if I can. I didn’t get my name just from destroying boredom but destroying plates of food and refrigerators. Recently with the economic situation many of us are having to drastically change our lifestyles, not being able to afford the yummy sushi or plates of ribs anymore. With factors such as unemployment and stress not only changes our eating habits change, but our weight can drop dramatically due to not having the same caloric intake of fatty foods as before.

In the past months my eating habits have changed drastically…

  1. Going from eating my dad’s very tasty but very very sodium filled and fatty foods. Oh but how I love the eggs and bacon every morning!
  2. Making the huge move to Greenville, starting to choose my own new diet with more healthy foods and dining out frequently.
  3. Losing my job and having to depend on sardines, pasta and whatever I can get at Big Lots or on sale. I eat all day long still and never go hungry! Plus I still eat out quite frequently thanks to coupons! Still though, I miss things like sushi and homecooked meals!

These major life changing factors and one nasty case of E.Coli caused me to lose weight drastically. Okay, so I only lost a few pounds. On many normal people this would go unnoticed, but as we know I am not of the norm. For me being very tall and skinny to begin with it, losing a few pounds gets lots of comments from concerned people since I hit Florida. Many I highly care for myself and can understand their concern, as I keep up with my weight as well and am very knowledgeable on nutrition. But telling me to eat a cheeseburger is not going to help, especially coming from someone overweight and having a large food budget. I have always been very skinny, and yes I look skinnier than normal right now but it’s just a temporary casualty of the economy until I get back to making the bacon!

Eating A Cheeseburger is NOT a Healthy Route to Gain Weight!
Eating crap food to instantly pack on the pounds is going to cause long term health problems and could start vicious circle of eating disorders and that’s what I want to talk about the most. This post is for all the others that may be hearing the same comments. I just would hate to see anyone fall into a horrible eating disorder because of hurtful things that people have said because they have lost some weight due to the current economic crisis.

You Wouldn’t Want to Be Called Fat Would You?
Calling someone too skinny without knowing the reasosn behind it first can be emotionally scarring, harmful and very discouraging to people who are struggling! Again, someone who is working on losing weight and working out is just like someone underweight trying to gain weight. It’s a long, hard process to be done correctly and needs understanding, encouragement and support!

I Currently Weigh The Same As Most Supermodels of My Same Height.
You may think “Wow, that’s great… I wish I did too.. what the hell are you complaining about Miss D?” The difference between me and a supermodel is I don’t have a million dollars for a dietitian and a personal trainer. I am still trying to find the balance of food to help me gain weight without going into debt for my own body type and exercise schedule.

Take Into Account Calories Burned During Exercise.
This is hard also for someone who wants to maintain their current workout schedule without burning off all the calories they took in that day. I can suggest lots of carbs, pastas and potatoes are cheap and healthy! Don’t forget that cans of tuna, nuts and using olive oil and eating peanut butter contains lots of good fats! I currently also add Alive Multivitamins and Fish Oil to my diet along with Sweet Wheat (when I can afford it!).

You Are What You Eat
Being on a budget or little to no income you can still eat cheap and healthy. I have found that eating more healthier with much more veggies (Yams!) and fish, cutting out red meat and milk for the most part has caused my psoriasis to almost go into remission, (something I have been struggling with for years!). My skin is much happier, my hair is shinier, and I actually feel comfortable in a bathing suit because yes folks, us skinny gals get cellulite and weird pudgy places too!

Hunger Pains Still?
You can apply for government food stamps in your state or check local food banks for their weekly stock. Also, you can think about throwing a potluck dinner with other friends that are struggling. Be creative! It’s okay, we will all get through this thick or thin!

Will Work For Yams,
-Miss Destructo

I read this with … fascination.

I think I’ll blog this over on my diet blog (and send u some linky love).

Just realised that you probably weigh less than the amt of weight I’ve lost. Gawds! I’ve lost an entire Miss Destructo and I’m still not where I want to be, LOL!

Fascinating viewpoint from the other side. Thank you!

PS: remember that fat doesn’t make you gain weight (no, it doesn’t. They’ve been lying to you). Your recommendation of carbs is right on. The simpler the better for health.

Good luck!

I clicked your link to this in twitter expecting some fan had made a flash game or movie involving you and the ability to make you shrink using mouse clicks and drags. I now feel a bit silly… not least as that proves i would click on a link to such a game…

I love this post. More of this information needs to be out there for the average person to digest (i didn’t mean that).

I think too many people use circumstances (any, really) as an excuse to make the wrong choices, whether it’s because it’s more convenient or just feels like a safer option.

Well said, I hope a lot of people see and read this, and benefit from it’s messages.

And good luck to you in getting through these times… at least you’re doing it the right way, and not short changing yourself.

My sister was tortured in school by people calling her “anorexic” etc without knowing the first thing about her. She is one of those naturally thin, long people the rest of us either admire or secretly are jealous of. Glad to hear you’re putting your health and individuality first.

MEG- You are amazing. I read your diet blog, what a journey you’ve been through. More than a whole me! Incredible!

Beau- That would be hilarious, a little game like space invaders but shooting down cupcakes and yams.
Thank you, it’s nice to hear good feedback on this. I realize it’s strange to hear a skinny person talking about weight issues but nowadays it’s very common. Thank you for reading!
